The Goliath Before Me

Writer's picture: Molly ShafferMolly Shaffer

I have always been encouraged by the story of David and Goliath, and the idea of a scrawny teenage boy overcoming a giant Philistine that the entire army of Israel wouldn’t face. The fact that David refuses armor and uses a sling and some stones to defeat this formidable foe, only adds more drama to the story.

As a child, this story was adventurous and heroic, kind of like the superhero movies of today. But the older and wiser I become, the more I realize that this story is less about David’s strength and more about his faith. Alone, David could not defeat Goliath. The dude was a giant, with an iron spearhead that weighed 15 pounds. David was a shepherd boy, untrained in battle--armed with a sling and a stone. And yet, David volunteered to fight Goliath, even when mocked by his older brother. David knew something the others around him had forgotten. David knew how big his God was.

Sometimes I forget how big my God is, or I limit Him with my doubt. I want to have a faith like David. I always have. A faith willing to fight lions and bears to protect the sheep entrusted to him. A faith so strong, I can stand before an army of terrified men, men who ridiculed and mocked me. A faith to say, despite the naysayers, “The Lord will hand this giant over to me.”

Today, I am facing a giant. It is mighty. It is fierce. And on my own, I cannot defeat him. But with God, he shrivels to the size of a mustard seed. With God, I can crush him beneath my feet. With God, I can move this mountain. With God, I can be fearless in the face of death. With God, I can, and will, slay my Goliath. With Christ, I can do all things... and so can you.
